The Vel of Wisdom and Strength
Thaipusam signifies the day when Goddess Parvati gave the vel to Lord Murugan to vanquish Soorapadman.
Just like Soorapadman whose parents are Kashyapa (a rishi) and Maya (an Asura princess), Man is born as a spiritual being with also a vision veiled by illusion (Maya). Soorapadman symbolises the ego and as the Purana has stated, he cannot be destroyed by anyone except a being from Lord Shiva Himself. How can the ego-self cease to exist by any other means except through Supreme consciousness itself?
Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, represents matter, and it is through the existence of matter that the existence of consciousness is recognised. Hence, the handing of the vel to the product of consciousness (Man) is akin to equipping it (Man) with the weapon of wisdom and strength
to overcome the illusion of the ego-self.
Sadhana is fulfilled when one contemplates on this significance on this day.
Love and light,
Genevieve.
